As you may have already guessed, that’s not the dawn. It’s the lights of Cork City (and Blarney) shining and into the sky in a long exposure shot I made last August.
I had meant to mention this sooner but 2 weeks ago I was shocked to hear about the death of Debbie Metrustry (@debbiemet), a wonderful person I had the pleasure of conversing with by tweet and by email over the course of the last year or so. She even won a print on this blog last year, but between this and that I never got around to sending it to her. I hope I can get in touch with her family at some stage and offer it to them instead.
Debbie’s blog on WordPress.com is still there and will be as long as the service is there (which is forever, right?), I’ve seen to that.
If you knew Debbie you might...

Bishop Lucey Park in Cork City was the location of a wonderful display of angel statues. They were decorated in all sorts of ways and even had one dedicated to Jedward!
Adam had a great time running around them, and had loads of fun playing with another boy named Nathaniel. They went crazy chasing around and screaming as loud as they could at the pigeons who had an unexpected bout of exercise!

The Galleries on Mallow Camera Club are back in operation! The site used to use a modified fGallery to allow members to upload photos but there’s an exploit for the last version of that plugin, it doesn’t work in WP 2.9.x and the author has abandoned the project unfortunately.
WordPress now supports galleries anyway so I converted the fGallery galleries into pages and upload files in the posts table. Works nicely now!

The new Opera Lane in Cork City separates the gleaming buildings of the new development that was built right in the heart of the city and completed this year. Back in July it was a rugged dirty construction site, and this photo is a fitting end to 2009, and the Noughties. Not much construction work going on anywhere in Ireland now. Just lots of debt.
I’ll post a photo tomorrow, but I’ll be posting every 3 days after that to give myself a little more free time. This blog gets a third of the traffic of Holy Shmoly! yet takes far more time to update. Traffic isn’t the reason why you should blog, but a photoblog is a very public display of creative work by it’s owner. Without feedback from new visitors it’s hard to maintain an enthusiasm for it. The unfortunate...

County Hall in Cork, as it was in 2005. Not so long ago it was flooded but it looks vaguely impressive when seen from certain viewpoints since the facelift it received in this photo.

No matter how bad the day, how crummy and wet the weather is, there’s always a silver lining. This day on the Slea Head the silver lining was the fact that our toddler slept the whole drive around, and of course this photo.
This is the beach at Couminole on Slea Head in County Kerry. It had been pouring rain earlier in the day, it was very windy and cold but the waves pounded the sand and I lapped up the view. Love the countryside in County Kerry!

That same fence again, this time against the setting sun and reflected in a pool of water from the recent rains. Loved taking this shot and others at the time, they turned out almost as good as I imagined they would!

This is my desktop background. I love it! After Inch Strand on the way to Dingle in County Kerry the road gets very narrow and winds through the hills before coming down to sea level again. The picture above should be a familiar scene to anyone who has travelled that road!
The day we drove down to Dingle was a stormy one but the sun suddenly broke through the clouds and I had to pull over and get half a dozen shots of the beautiful golden light, the countryside and the rainbow. Stunning, even if I do say so myself!

Right on the pier in Dingle are two trawlers that are slowly falling to pieces. The one pictured above is severely burned, windows burned out and broken. Moss grows on the deck amid the rubbish.
I can’t believe it’s still there. It was there last year when we visited, and may even have been there the time before that!
