False dawn of the city via In Photos dot org February 23rd, 2010 at 15:17

image As you may have already guessed, that’s not the dawn. It’s the lights of Cork City (and Blarney) shining and into the sky in a long exposure shot I made last August. I had meant to mention this sooner but 2 weeks ago I was shocked to hear about the death of Debbie Metrustry (@debbiemet), a wonderful person I had the pleasure of conversing with by tweet and by email over the course of the last year or so. She even won a print on this blog last year, but between this and that I never got around to sending it to her. I hope I can get in touch with her family at some stage and offer it to them instead. Debbie’s blog on WordPress.com is still there and will be as long as the service is there (which is forever, right?), I’ve seen to that. If you knew Debbie you might...

Look up at the roof via In Photos dot org October 22nd, 2009 at 15:16

image The ceiling of the Sanctuaire de Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré in Quebec is quite a sight. In a low light situation you can’t get a more stable support than the floor at your feet, lucky me. A wide angle lens meant I had to run for cover lest the camera capture me in the image. The 2 second timer was very convenient for this purpose. Wet, shiny stones via In Photos dot org October 9th, 2009 at 08:41

image The outgoing tide on Fountainstown Beach leaves behind wet stones and seaweed as it retreats. This is a long exposure shot of one second with my camera resting on one of those rocks! By the time you read this I’ll be on a plane, in the air most likely, or waiting for a connection in Heathrow more likely. More details to follow. Cork City Hall via In Photos dot org July 16th, 2009 at 21:13

image Cork City Hall, on the banks of the River Lee. Shot on the same night as yesterday’s shot of Gardner House. Also not the first time I’ve posted a photo of City Hall! Only 9 places left for the photowalk. Unfortunately the weather forecast for Saturday is bad so umbrellas and raincoats are a must. I’ll be emailing everyone tomorrow too. Watch your inbox! Gardner House via In Photos dot org July 15th, 2009 at 21:53

image As I mentioned already in my Polish Coal post, my dad worked in Suttons Coals for years. Gardner House on the South Mall in Cork used to be called Suttons House but then coal’s fortunes changed. Oil and gas became more popular. Legislation banned any coal other than smokeless coal from urban areas and the coal industry in Ireland went into decline. Anyway, South Mall is the “financial district” in Cork City. There are some beautiful buildings but also some damn ugly ones like Gardner House and the white building across from it. The photowalk on Saturday is almost full! Will is going to be there too and has blogged all the photowalks countrywide. It’s going to be busy! On the off chance it’s going to rain make sure to bring an umbrella, or at least a rain...

Light Streaks of City Traffic via In Photos dot org February 9th, 2009 at 09:26

Kinsale at Night via In Photos dot org July 2nd, 2008 at 20:38

image The quiet, residential part of Kinsale as photographed from the busy touristy part across the harbour! This was a long exposure shot that came out quite nicely but it did show up the dead pixels on my sensor again. Good thing I don’t have time to shoot many of these types of photos nowadays. The fight against comment spammers never ends. This blog is listed on a few “do follow” listings and I caught someone this morning leaving a comment after they came here from a “site:inphotos.org” Google search. The comment is delinked but even if I hadn’t, his url still wouldn’t have shown because I only show it after a certain number of comments have been made. It’s my thank you to the regular commenters here. The pagerank you get from that link...

How to short circuit via In Photos dot org May 27th, 2008 at 21:05

image Ever since I posted Short Circuit I’ve been meaning to post a small tutorial on how I did it. There were so many comments from people clamouring to know the secret of how I made traces of light dance around the picture frame. Actually, nobody asked. Will was kind enough to suggest another title but otherwise it went unremarked. *sob* I’m going to tell you anyway. The image is a long exposure shot, of at least 1 second and preferably 4 or 5 seconds. I simply stood in front of a construction site at night, lifted the camera, hit the shutter and rotated the camera around in my hands. Needless to say, I did not have the strap around my neck or I would have done myself damage! At first I tried Aperture Priority mode, setting the aperture really small (big numbers, around F/22), but...

That after sun glow via In Photos dot org February 4th, 2008 at 16:43

image The after sun glow The sun had just set over this stretch of the water in Cork Harbour near Monkstown and the sky had turned a beautiful orange and purple and red and golden. Starlight headlights via In Photos dot org December 28th, 2007 at 06:47

image Starlight headlights A long five second exposure at f/22 captured cars stuck on Patrick Street about a month ago. They’ve done some fabulous work on the pavements of Cork’s main thoroughfare but it hasn’t made a jot of difference to vehicular traffic, except to make it more dangerous to pedestrians as they saunter across junctions blissfully unaware of the cars bearing down on them .. Starlight Christmas Lights via In Photos dot org December 19th, 2007 at 13:31

image Starlight Christmas Lights The Christmas lights on Carey’s Lane shine brightly in this long exposure shot. The exposure is so long that crowds of people walked past, some apologising, without evening showing up on the final image! The only person visible is a homeless guy sitting in a doorway. I love how the Christmas lights came out in this. f/22 does lovely things to points of light. This was taken one evening while in town and I had a few moments to spare. Get out the camera, crouch down and put the wallet under the lens to point it up a bit. Perfectly still, without a tripod! While I shot this I realised where this photo was taken! Light trails on Oliver Plunkett Street via In Photos June 5th, 2007 at 07:45

image Light trails on Oliver Plunkett Street Light trails from a passing car leave their mark on this long exposure shot of Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork. Can you see pink lights on the vertical poles standing at the edge of the pavement? On my Linux box they’re clear as day but I can’t see them at all in Preview on the Macbook. The lights were designed and made by MAAS here in Cork and the colour changes slowly from blues to purples to pinks to yellow and to any other colour.
