Mighty Shtuff: This Is Da Return Of Da Space Cowboy via Riemann's Cut November 20th, 2010 at 22:15

After some confusion earlier, Dáithí Ó Sé themed posts have returned. Contrary to popular belief, I have nothing against the man. I actually kinda like him. Well I mean, as much as I know of him. But who knows what wicked stuff he gets up to at home. Maybe he strangulates kittens and uses their corpses as Kleenex tissues to wipe the cream-pies from the crotches of the cadavers that he copulates with, after stealing them from the local morgue. A little too dark? Ok. He comes across far better when he's speaking Irish. He's a total natural on TG4, but perhaps that might be an indication of his maligned "bogmanitus" image. Nevermind though, I'm sure the only reason he seems a bit awkward when speaking English is because his mind thinks in Irish, and there's some...

Investigating a Chick Corea “Moog & Rhodes” Solo via Riemann's Cut October 23rd, 2010 at 16:47

The video above shows an extract of Return To Forever performing "Dual of the Jester and the Tyrant" from their live video "Returns: Live at Montreux". On top of this footage I've layered a melodic spectrogram which I generated* from the audio track using the fabulous piece of open software "Sonic Visualiser." Sonic Visualiser is a truely great audio analysis application, and it's been great aid in many things I've done with music and audio in the past. Well worth checking out if you're anyway involved with music or audio. In the middle of the frame you'll see some black and white markings. These markings correspond to the 12 notes in a standard Western chromatic scale. They are laid out like you're see on a piano, but the colours are reversed (i.e. black for white and vice-versa). The...

McCoy Tyner Style Tutorial via Riemann's Cut August 5th, 2010 at 00:39

I think the first tip given with this video is the most noteworthy. The pentatonic scale is often maligned and denigrated as the scale of wank[citation needed] but it can actually be quite powerful, when used with a bit of variety. Also point 4 is quite apt. about "dynamite drummers!" When I saw the McCoy Tyner Trio play the Cork Jazz festival one year, I was right up in the back row of the upper dress circle and I swear to god, the drummer was blasting my head off, without amplification! 1. Know your pentatonic scales in all 12 keys. If you need to review these check out the pentatonic tutorial done by Volvoxburger - watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVYky3... Practice different patterns in the right hand using these scales and try moving in and out of different...

Michel Petrucciani - “Caravan” via Riemann's Cut July 18th, 2010 at 01:00

Juan Tizol's "Caravan" standard is an old favorite of mine, but Michel Petrucciani totally shreds it here. I first saw Petrucciani perform over 10 years ago on a Channel 4 special about disabled people, hosted by Nick Knight (fashion photographer). The name and references to this jazz pianist soon faded from my recolection, but the memory of the performance lingered on and I rediscovered this Jazz virtuoso some time last year. An amazing player in his own right, irrespective of his physical hamperings. His rhythmical ostinatos are outstanding. Petrucciani has left us in 1999 but I suggest to any jazz fan they should check out this mans past work, they will not be disappointed....

Cork Jazz Festival is looking interesting for 2010! via StevieGBlog April 28th, 2010 at 17:27

I met with some of the people organising the forthcoming Cork jazz Festival in October last week and I came away confident that this years event will even surpass last years one, which in my opinion, was the best festival in many years. The balance between commercial and artistic success at such a festival is always tricky, but in 2009 big acts such as Imelda May in the Savoy were backed by a host of others who filled different sized venues in one of the busiest jazz weekends since the 90’s. Sun Ra Arkestra, Pharoah Sanders, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Dam-Funk and many more played very highly regarded shows, and notably, their was a very big travelling contingent from other Irish cities and indeed abroad. This year events is still quite a bit away but I can tell you that there...
