Maemo vs Meego – round two via Branedy January 11th, 2011 at 10:16

I have been spending way too much time in Quora but it has proved interesting. I have learned from some of the discussions that Meego is a bit of a ruse. It seems that there are actually two Meego’s one is the ‘netbook’ variety, more or less a rehashed Moblin (Intel’s contribution to the partnership) and the other is Meego/Harmattan which is really Maemo 6 with some compatibility with Meego/Moblin. This whole Meego thing is really just a marketing thing. It’s no wonder that more vendors haven’t jumped onto the open source Meego train, they don’t know which one to get on. Meego/Moblin is Atom based and the Meego/Maemo is ARM. I wonder how far this bait and switch will last? Here’s hoping PR 1.4 for my Nokia N900 really will allow a dual...

MeeGo is now Dead, as a Mobile OS. via Branedy December 2nd, 2010 at 08:51

This article MeeGo will not displace Symbian as enterprise OS has now demonstrated that Meego is no longer supported by Nokia, and it will be left to die with Maemo as a ‘Non-Runner’ in the Mobile-OS arena. It also indicates that Nokia Management has gone down the MicroSoft path to complete irrelevance in the Mobile Phone market. It’s no wonder the Maemo/Meego managers and developers at Nokia are leaving. Most are heading to the surviving Mobile OS’s Android, Web-OS, iOS and Blackberry....

Maemo vs Meego via Branedy May 29th, 2010 at 15:33

This week Nokia announced that MeeGo would not officially be supported on the N900. On first appearance this would seem to be a bad thing. But I managed to down load the MeeGo v1.0 for Netbooks and burned it to a DVD. I attempted to run this with VirtualBox and then Parallels and neither would finish the load. But my old work Dell Pentium 4 worked just fine booting from the CD. So I went exploring, and overall it was a bit of fun, and most 5 year olds will be comfortable in a few minutes with it. But use it on an adult machine, a netbook to get work done on? Not a chance, it’s like a world-of-wonder 5-10 year old grade toy. And guess what, it’s a GREAT thing that this, this, what ever MeeGo is, is not going to be forced ‘officially’ on the N900 users of the...

Forgotten Rule of IT! via Branedy March 19th, 2009 at 15:55

image If you happen to read my Blog, you will know that I’ve started a project to build a home server that more or less mimics the sort of server I use at the office. And while I’ve have had the parts for a few days, in fact, assembled on the first day, following some basic photos, I have not really begun to operate it. During the weekend, a fellow blogger Connor announced, rather twittered that they had their home media server assembled and running. At first I thought he had beaten me to the Idea, but his is more for home Media, MythTV, rather than IT practice and development. And then he was hit with the first rule of IT regarding new equipment. “Don’t count your systems until they have burned in“. Which is what happened, his system failed due to a common...

Apple control of iPhone applications via Branedy April 22nd, 2008 at 09:02

I think there is a good reason for Apple wanting to control the applications being created and distributed on iPhone and iPod touch systems. Rubbish! In the last week or so, since I have been using my Palm T/X I have been singularly impressed with good applications, and shocked at the pure Rubbish applications that are available to load into my Palm. Mind you, and remember, that many of these applications are legacy from the Palm’s transition from the Motorola Dragonball processors to ARM/XScale CPU’s. And hence face a hardware hurtle that Apple MAY not have to face. Should Apple transition the current ARM iPhone/iPod’s to Intel, they too will face similar troubles. But returning to the control issue, there would be a bit of control over the quality of application...

Palm and the mysterious nosedive via Branedy May 3rd, 2006 at 14:18

I am seeing all sorts of articles about Palm and handheld devices in general being in a nosedive. Handheld Sales Nosedive and Handheld sales continue to slide and it represents what is wrong in market research. Market Research! The primary reason that Handheld sales, and most notably Palm, it this. While most companies are in the replacement/upgrade mode of operation, Microsoft/Intel mindset. Where every time a software release is, well, released. You must buy a new computer. Palm has had a serious problem with their systems, they don’t need replacement. At least not very often. And while they are not perfect, they have bugs, and issues, they do something that other machines don’t do. They are consistent, focused products. Once a bug becomes a known bug, there is a known work...

The Stockmarket as Reality via Branedy March 23rd, 2006 at 20:50

I always love this Microsoft delays launch of Vista and Apple Stock price drops. With this kind of reality, it doesn’t matter how good Mac’s are or how much better OS-X is (now and in the Future) than Vista. If Vista fails to ship, Apple loses. It’s like if the sun does not rise, neither will the moon. What kind of people trade stocks anyway. Apple will be making a killing on the Vista delay, heck, with Vista out of the running for the fall Christmas season, there will be only one computer to buy for the back to school crowd?...

EFI, Vista and Apple via Branedy March 13th, 2006 at 17:44

The news circulating around the web that there will be No Vista on Mac’s horizon. is part FUD and partly an indication of the crumbling underpinnings of Vista. The first part, the FUD part, is that 32 Bit Vista will not work on Mac’s new Intel platform. This is partly due to the new “Extensible Firmware Interface” (EFI) that is used in the new MacBook, iMac, and iMac mini. It has more to do with the decision that Vista will be looking to a past vista, looking backward to platforms that do not have EFI. If Vista had not work on the old BIOS systems there would have been no backward compatibility to older (i.e.. Current) hardware platforms. The other part is that this is only true of 32 bit, and not the 64 bit version of Vista. The second is, believing that the new...

Apple design and the whole shebang via IT in the Emerald Isle March 1st, 2006 at 15:38

image If anyone needs another reason that Apple switched to the Intel processors it just appeared. The new mac mini contains the same processor and buss as that of the iMac. How it this a reason? Simple, part of what makes Apples OS-X operating system so stable is that it targets Apple’s own hardware. The G5 powerPC chip had created a schism between the Apple G5 desktop, and the Apple G4 laptops. And this complicated the support issues. Now all development will be contained in Duel Cores and phasing out of the PowerPC inventory. Looks like I will have to upgrade my G3 iBook AND my G4 iMac now The circus marches......

Apple’s “Fun New Products” via IT in the Emerald Isle February 28th, 2006 at 23:37

No one appeared to notice the item pulled from Apple’s “Fun New Products” Event Coverage today. Looks like the missing item might have been compared to the MicroSoft’s Origami. Or maybe Apple is waiting for the patents to be awarded....

IBooks, MacBooks and iBook Duo Docking Stations via IT in the Emerald Isle February 4th, 2006 at 10:39

Now that shipments of computer laptops has exceeded shipments of computer desktops. Now is the time for Apple to trump the world and bring back the PowerBook Docking Station. I have one of these myself, with a PowerBook Duo 250 inserted into it. This would make a great dual function system. A compact laptop, and a simple easy docking station that would add real functionality and extend the laptop into a full fledged desktop computer. Or how about a MacPad that would have a Dock that would act as a Full laptop, and a......
