A GPS for Genealogy via Branedy May 24th, 2010 at 15:21

image One of the things that i’ve found very useful about the GPS in the Nokia N900 is that when the wife and I are out investigating the back-and-beyonds the N900 is suppling us with townlands as we traverse. In genealogy often the only locational information you can find are townlands, and many modern maps do not label them. Now I don’t know if othe GPS’s have this data, but it’s nice to have them in the pocket, in the form of the N900....

Nokia Maps 2.0 broken in Ireland? via Argolon October 26th, 2008 at 12:21

image Nokia Maps 2.0 I’ve been raving about Nokia Maps since I got my N95-8GB last December. Having voice-guided turn-by-turn directions on your phone is a killer app. It totally saved us getting back from Carnac to Roscoff this summer after printed Google Maps made a total mess of the outbound journey. However something has gone badly wrong in Ireland and I’m not sure how long the problem has been there. I’m running the latest V30 firmware on my N95-8GB which includes the latest Nokia Maps 2.0. The big problem is that it seems to have lost the ability to find addresses. Unless you give an utterly vague address like Rathmines, Dublin, it will fail. Most attempts at putting in street names or numbers fails. But what is driving me insane is that is has the data. The latest...

N810 leaves me cold via Argolon June 22nd, 2008 at 11:40

image Nokia N810 Internet Tablet I really thought I would love this device considering how much I like its old N770 brother. However it completely misses the mark and I can find no place for it in my daily workflow. Dare I say it, I would prefer an iPod Touch! Last May at Cork OpenCoffee, Gordon Murray told everyone about an amazing bargain on Expansys. Nokia N770 Internet Tablets were selling for approx €100. By the end of the coffee morning, more than 10 had been ordered and after a few hours humming and hawing I got one too. Initially I loved it with its touch screen, wifi, bluetooth, web browser etc. Then I realised it was based on Linux and discovered the treasure trove of Maemo apps out there. Pretty soon I had a good application stack including some of my desktop favourites like...

Satnav GPS experience in Ireland via Daniel Mackey On Absolutely Anything... January 7th, 2008 at 18:45

As my Christmas present this year, Ol got me a spanking new GPS system for the car. It is running the Navteq 2007 Q2 maps and I must say is the best vehicle GPS device I have had or seen yet. The unit itself is a branded MyGuide 4200 GPS system. The vehicle mount was tidy and secure and the device has all the latest european maps preloaded. Coupled with Bluetooth connectivity with my iphone, it makes the best hands free system money can buy! I have tried untis from TomTom and Garmin in the past and was always disappointed with the maps installed. Ears has a garmin and it sent him down a one way street! I bought a Dell GPS device to connect to my Axim 2 years ago and used Mapopolis for the navigation software. Load of rubbish! Stay well clear of that GPS software! While using the Satnav...

Explore Cork City in Photos via In Photos March 2nd, 2007 at 20:41

image Flickr has a wonderful mapping system that makes it super easy to view photos from a particular location. Unfortunately Flickr can’t automatically figure out where the photo was taken. That has to be done by the user but it’s as simple as opening the map in your browser and dragging it to the proper location. In the future your camera will do this for you like the brand new Canon 1D MKIII already does. I do offer one warning. There are 17 pages of photos around Cork City center alone. It’s going to take you a while to get through them all but it’s an enjoyable romp around the city. You might even come across a few new sights! Go explore the city! If discovering Cork isn’t enough, you can also visit Dublin, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, or even Blarney. Out of...

GSM location tracking via Ambrand Dot Com February 27th, 2006 at 01:21

This vague O2 pagee suggest this facility, which has existed since GSMs inception, may actually be available to end users, or perhaps its just GPS > GPRS? On a related note check out this BBC Online article....
