‘an chuid eile’ of the world via Branedy August 21st, 2010 at 11:38

I have been having discussions all over the net about smartphones and feature phones and the vast marketplace for non smartphones in the third world. A market that Nokia is big in, but is not well supported with things like facebook, Twitter and other social networking communications features, due, in part to the lack of more robust networks in those areas. Even during a discussion at yesterdays Cork Open Coffee the subject of community services came up and I was reminded of a New Beta from Nokia called Nokia Listings ( here, here, here. and here ) which is intended to support communications, operating within a weak infrastructure, in a social networking type of framework....

Outcome of testing Mobile Broadband (O2 and Vodafone) via Argolon June 10th, 2008 at 16:11

image Mobile Broadband in Ireland This is actually a combined review of O2 and Vodafone Ireland mobile broadband services since I tested them in parallel. Neither is a replacement for fixed-line BB but in certain situations, the O2 modem is extremely fast and was my winner overall. I’ve railed against both O2 and Voda on repeated occasions for not offering decent value proper data plans on phones. I’ve also read a wide variety of opinions on the various mobile broadband offferings with Three getting the most abuse. In order to find out for myself I signed up for both O2 and Voda’s dongles on the same day. They are both Huawei devices with the O2 one being the more modern E270. I believe the only major difference is that the E270 supports HSUPA (7.2 MBs) out of the box...

Long term review: Sony Ericsson W810i phone via Holy Shmoly! December 26th, 2007 at 12:48

image A year ago I pondered buying a Sony Ericsson K750i but eventually bought it’s big brother, the Sony Ericsson W810i instead. At the time I was impressed, especially with the panorama function of the camera, but I’ve grown to loath this piece of technology in the year since I bought it. Here’s why. “Message waiting, Too many messages. Delete some from any folder. Delete now? Despite the fact there’s a 512MB memory stick plugged into the side, the phone can only store about 130 text messages. My old Nokia 7650 spoiled me. I rarely deleted any text messages but this phone is always on the brink of being full. That’s a problem I can accept, except it’s buggy. For some reason the phone checks the sim card memory and asks me to delete messages from...

Flat Rate 3G — The Possibilities via Dave's Rants April 14th, 2006 at 16:51

image Back in January James mentioned that it’d be great if we got flat rate charges for GPRS usage. I agreed totally. I rarely use the browser on my phone specifically because I’ll be screwed for using it. Of course this means that the network makes absolutely nothing from me, whereas with flat rates for data I’d use it extensively. Yesterday James pointed me towards this post about how we were due to get flat rate HSDPA access. This is excellent news! This brings us far closer to the way these things work in the US. In the US you can get an EVDO data card and an unlimited data plan for $60 a month. Now what would this mean for me, or rather what could I possibly do with this. Well I could stop my DSL & home phone line, this would leave me with just a mobile and a mobile...
