I’m lazy so this is almost word for word a copy & paste of the press release. Fair play to Freakscene, 15 years is some achievement!
Freakscene will set a new record for Ireland’s longest running club-night when it celebrates its 15th Birthday on March 11th.
Six up-and-coming bands have been invited to perform on the night. Though all of them (bar one, Assassins are a side project of a number of original Cork bands)) write their own material, the bands will be performing covers of their favourite Freakscene tunes on the night as well as a couple of their own songs so they get to showcase what they are about, as well as guaranteeing to rock the house for Freakscene’s 15th!

Rock With Your Cork Out
Egomotion/Melting Pot
Ireland | 2008 | 90mins | HDV | Colour
Irish by birth, Cork by the grace of God. How better to repay the favour than make heavenly music.
Cork Rock musicians have high hopes, dreams and aspirations. They work by day and play by night. They rock till their fingers bleed in dark pub corners; they practice in cold steel containers on the banks of the Lee. They travel to far-off gigs in clapped-out vans beneath their amps and drums; they knock on...

Maeve Higgins appears in City Limits Comedy Club for two nights, on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th July. We have a few pairs of passes to give away for these shows. To be in with a chance of winning, just send an email to competitions@corkgigs.com and tell us from which town in Cork does Maeve hail.
Maeve Higgins is a self-styled lyrical assassin, in her head. In reality she is a stand up lady who’s been very busy for the past two years.
She has performed at festivals in faraway Australia, nearby Kilkenny and quite close, Edinburgh.
She does a guest slot every monday on the Ray D’arcy Show on Today FM, discussing crucial issues and trying not to make mouth sounds (she hates when other people on the radio make mouth sounds). She also features in the hit show Naked Camera on RTE2, where...

This 11th of May, will see the 5th anniversary of Noel Redding’s passing.
As the original Bass player with The Jimi Hendrix Experience Noel’s contribution to rock n roll’ will echo throughout musical history.
Outside the Rock n roll world Noel’s impact on his adopted home of West Cork was as monumental as it was on the international stage. To this day his musical legacy remains in Clonakilty through the festivals he helped to inspire and the abundance of musical talent that he fostered and attracted to the locality.
And so over the course of the weekend of the 9th -11th of May the town of Clonakilty will celebrate the life and career of Noel Redding as he would have wanted himself, through music, from the rock n’ roll of the 50s and 60s that influenced him to the sounds with...

Wow. I had the pleasure recently of seeing Duke Special live for the first time. He’s played Cork before, in the same venue too, but I didn’t bother going the last time. I had been familiar with his single (was it released?) ‘Last Night I Nearly Died’ from the generous airtime it was given on various radio shows — Tom Dunne and Colm O’Sullivan in particular — but it just didn’t strike me as anything out of the ordinary.
Then I discovered the real Duke Special. Having tuned into Other Voices on RTE to catch Elbow’s performance, I saw the dreadlocked Duke performing first ‘Portrait’ and then ‘Last Night I Nearly Died.’ This performance, without percussion or any accompaniment besides his piano, revealed a whole...

Rightio folks, when the light flickers, hold on to yer knickers. Its the two Johns from Kerrynini here, just giving ye the 411 on this whole Kinsale Arts Festival lark. The lovely folk running the festival have kindly donated a few shillings to us so that we could get some bands to play some free outdoor shows to you the beautiful people, heh! We’ll be taking over the Sounds On The Square stage for 5 nights over the course of two weekends.
There’ll be roughly 3 bands playing each night, and we’ll be spinning some records in between acts as well just to keep the heads boppin. Each night, the music will kick off at around 7pm and continue through until around 12. Obviously, every show is completely free and open to all ages. Sure, tis outside like, heh!

The programme for the Cork Midsummer Festival was launched on Tuesday last in the Bodega. The festival, which runs from Tuesday 19th - Saturday 30th June, will this year feature, among other highlights, the biggest Spiegeltent line-up yet. Our interest is mostly in the live music events during the festival and again this year a lot of Cork favourites will perform at the Spiegeltent, including John Spillane, Mick Flannery, The Frank & Walters and the Sultans of Ping. Red FM’s Stevie G will host an evening showcasing young Cork talent from all genres, and needless to say this event will be open to attendees of all ages. Other notable gigs include Kila, Karan Casey, Camille, Julie Feeney and Karen Egan.

I've girded myself up to spray another spurt of text across the net again. I sort of have to get in the habit of posting more often, but ...I'll do a Barcamp report shortly, but I've been looking at my own blog, and there will be changes soon. For those of you visiting (as opposed to RSS reading) you'll see a long blogroll of bands on the Left hand side. It's going to go away soon.I've been using the wonders of "MyBlogLog" to see that, with the exceptions of Snow Patrol and The Frames those links go largely ignored.Which makes sense since it's been a long time since I've blogged about music and gigs.So I'll offer this... a shared google calendar of Cork Gigs. THE SPIKES
Since the successful debut single release of ‘Monster’ in July, The Spikes followed up with the critically acclaimed, ‘In Love No More’ in November. They are now set for their most daring release to date with ‘Ninja Girlfriend’. The Spikes have successfully set about re-establishing the niche for the rock ‘n’ roll four-piece.
With three singles under their belt The Spikes are not to be taken lightly, their live show has been turning heads since they began over a year and a half ago. Frontman Tom...
