I was shocked and sad to learn that one of the main stars of the forth coming Batman film The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger was found dead in his New York City apartment yesterday evening.
Speculation on his death circles around a drug overdose but it is unkown whether it was accidental.
Heath Ledger was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the controversial film Broke Back Mountain and was brought to Hollywood fame by Mel Gibson as a supporting role in the The Patriot.
I first remember Heath Ledger from the film 10 Things I Hate About You, followed by A Knights Tale and The Brothers Grimm. Although I wasnt a major Heath Ledger fan, I was really looking forward to seeing him the new Batman film, The Dark Kight (more information here)
What a waste of talent. Heath Ledger was only 28...

I cant wait for this film : Batman the Dark Knight!
I have always been a fan of Batman and when I was younger really liked the original Batman films. The Tim Burton ones though, not the rather gay neon pointless films (Mr. Clooney et al) After Superman, Batman would be my next favourite super hero.
When they decided to revisit the brand with a spanking new take on the gritty character which is Batman / Bruce Wayne, I was over joyed when they cast one of my all time favourite actors - Christian Bale! Dark Knight is the next installment from the same creators/directors/cast and a full trailer can be viewed in hi-res here :

Speaking of superheros, I see there is a new film featuring Batman, Superman and more DC Comic charaters...

This is England
Good stuff
I’ll admit that I was a little bit hesitant about this, another super low budget “slightly troubled young British boy falls in with wrong crowd” movie, but it was a nice surprise. This is England plays on nostalgia for 1983 urban England in the same way that Donnie Darko brought back 1988 small-town America. Thatcher, the Falklands, Roland Rat, Rubiks Cubes, Come on Eileen etc. I was just a baby in 1983, but it looks like I didn’t miss much!
Some of the acting was outstanding - even though most of the cast had never done anything before, except for maybe the odd episode of Coronation Street. The only actor I recognised was Tommy from Snatch, as the skinhead who would like everyone to know he has definitely got...
A good few years back BMW did the BMW Films project. They got some gifted directors to create short films that featured the BMW product range. Each director created some great movies and the cinematography really showed off the BMWs. Below are some of those films. The driver in each film is Clive Owen.
Ambush - Directed by John Frankenheimer, he of Ronin fame and written by Andrew Kevin Walker, he of Se7en fame.
Chosen - Directed by Ang Lee, just before he made the really really awful “The Hulk”.
The Follow - Directed by Wong Kar Wai of “In the mood for love” fame. Possibly the best of the films.
Star - Directed by Guy Richie where he absolutely takes the piss out of his wife. Stars Madonna as a super-egotistical music star.
Powder Keg directed by...
An interesting items about movies and word of mouth got me thinking.
Snakes on a Plane, well it bombed once people saw it. Word spread that it really was turkey on film. Something like "Little Miss Sunshine" gets little press but good word of mouth, and it becomes a sleeper hit in the US (expect it to be a big movie over here). And part of the word of mouth is, well, blogs.
What did the studios learn from Snakes on a Plane? Don't trust internet hype to put the people hyping it in the door... The ideas came think and strong from areas where the movies isn't available... of course the hype didn't meet the reality.
Start scanning the blogs after the movie is released (or while the movies is showing thanks to mobile devices) and it's a different story. 1000 good blog reviews can't be too...
It appears that the Gate Cinema now no longer does late shows. This of course means that the ability of being able to go into town and have a couple of pints before a film is now gone with the Gate ending the late shows and the Capitol Cineplex being no more!
There’s a bit of a discussion on Boards.ie about it.
