No sooner is the Decades Festival over that talk turns to another music festival and the announcement this week that will be welcomed by loads of Cork music fans. The Southern Soul and Disco Festival, which last ran in Cork in 1999, is returning in 2011 and will provide a big boost for the city. The Southern soul and disco weekends were a product of the Mor Disco and Simply Delicious nights that ran in Cork for many years and all of the operators have been keen for many years to get them back up and running. The original weekends drew great crowds to see some amazing acts, and a certain DJ and production duo called Basement Jaxx were one of the big names who went on to become very well known in music circles. Legendary diva’s such as Jocelyn Brown and Gwen Dickey of Rose Royce...

Duncan of Blairs Inn was giving out free samples of their delicious beef stew along with samples from other local restaurants at the festival in Blarney today.
Delicious stuff, and Blairs Inn is a great place to go for a meal too. Only been there once but we had a great meal there. Recommended.

One of the most powerful blogs I read in recent years was Roos Demol’s One Breast Less. I’m thrilled she has re-started it and she is involved in an Action Breast Cancer fundraiser.
Please head over there and show your support.
The concert, which still has no name (ideas welcome) will be held on October 29th in the Brogan Inn in Bandon. At the moment we are practising a barbershop song. It is quite challenging, but we’re having a lot of fun with it....

Brilliant job by Andrew Kingston of Arkutech.ie in building the new bandon.ie site.
A quick poke around confirmed that it is built on the same fantastic Wordpress foundation as this fine blog.
A certain person named Donncha O’Caoimh is one of the main developers of Wordpress and just lives a few miles away in Blarney. Bandon is clearly commited to buying local. OK Wordpress is free but you get my point!
The site is now much easier for Trevor and the crew to update regularly and most importantly of all, the site now has comments. This might seem a small thing to you but the importance of giving people the ability to have their voice heard online about local issues should never be underestimated.
The site is a superb local community resource, so head on over right away and check...

Patrick Naughton has been in touch to tell me about African drumming workshops that he runs for community groups, schools and festivals in Cork and the surrounding areas.
If you know of any such group that are looking for workshops or entertainers then do get in contact with him on pat.naughton@yahoo.co.uk
Quote:
Full Circles African Drumming workshops are an exciting, fun, addition to any festival or gathering that you have planned. We cater for both childrens and adults workshops on the day. In the childrens workshops we encourage parents to participate as well, especially in the case of very young members.
We are fully mobile and can provide up to 40 drums on the day with a variety of shakers bells, and African xylophones. Children and adults learn how to create their own rhythm, sing...

estival of African cultures which takes place in a host of different venues. As I always mention here, music is one of the best means of communication and personally I feel it has been a great way of understanding different cultures and the people behind them. The millions of Irish who have headed abroad over the last few centuries have made a fantastic impression culturally on other countries and it is great to see the amazing music of Africa now on our doorstep in Cork. It all kicks off tomorrow with a free conference discussing the political, economic and social changes and developments in Africa in the 21st Century. This takes place in the Millennium Hall and is free from 11.30am. The Official Festival Opening Ceremony takes place at 1pm at the Cork City Library and this...

As previously mentioned here in Downtown this summer in Cork brings us an amazing amount of soul and r&b gigs with many of the biggest names in music performing here. Already we had a cracking gig from Candi Staton last weekend and with Al Green, Michael McDonald, Booker T and Martha Reeves all in store, it’s fair to say anticipation levels are very high. This week I’m gonna preview a show in late May from one of my favourite acts of all time, Chic, who play live at the Savoy! Chic are quite simply one of the most influential groups of all time. I would have said till quite recently they were one of the most under-rated groups but I have noticed that their status and indeed recognition level has increased in the last few years. In this country they stole the show at last...

If you know me well, you may know I love the music of Queen. I never had the pleasure of seeing them live unfortunately but I’ve been to a number of Queen inspired events, Flash Harry played in Cobh a few years ago and there was Queen at the Ballet too. (Thanks Ken, Aisling, Proinnsias, Sinead!)
So I jumped at the chance to see Queen tribute band, Killer Queen when they played in the Opera House recently. They were good, some parts were great, and Brighton Rock was absolutely amazing even if I got the feeling some people in the audience didn’t know that song.
Killer Queen are a blast. The crowd loved them. Of the three performances I thought Flash Harry was the best but you’ll have a great time at Killer Queen too.

Engine No. 36 on display in Ken Station in Cork. Here’s what the Wikipedia page on the train station has to say about it:
An old locomotive is on permanent display in the concourse at Kent Station since 1950. “Engine No. 36″ dates from 1847 and is displayed in the booking hall. Originally built by Bury, Curtis, and Kennedy of Liverpool at a cost of £1,955, the engine was obtained by the Great Southern and Western Railway to run services from Dublin to Cork. The engine remained in service until 1874.
She was displayed at the Cork exhibition in 1902, the Railway Centenary Exhibition in 1925 and the bi-centenary of the Royal Dublin Society at Ballsbridge in 1930. She was moved to a new position and restored by Iarnród Éireann in 2007.
I could have sworn that train was...

Spike Island, a small island opposite Cobh and just off Ringaskiddy, is famous here in Cork for being a prison first and foremost. Ironically, most people in Cork don't even know where it is, and have certainly not visited there as it has till only recently remained a prison, but all that may be about to change as the Island is being officially handed over to the people of Cork on July 11th this year. With the Cork County Council developing it as a tourist attraction and potential venue of major cultural, artistic, sociological, geographical and historical importance, I was offered a rare insight into the Island itself this morning as myself and a number of other people involved in Cork's music scene were invited down for a visit. To say the potential of the Island for Cork is immense...

Martin’s Mad About Fish
With a single episode, the greatest TV show RTE have made about food in at least 25 years. Martin Shanahan jumps out of the screen, grabs you by the scruff of the neck and demands that you watch him and start loving fish.
After decades of dreary formulaic yawn inducing food programmes on Irish TV or worse, the “crayzzzzze kooky” shows, someone in RTE finally saw an episode of Jamie Oliver and realised what was missing – personality.
Where has Martin been hiding all this time? In the kitchens of the rightly legendary Fishy Fishy in Kinsale? He’s a force of nature. He is everything that made Darina a legend – knowledge, passion, humour. But he goes far beyond that, he’s an absolute TV natural. He belongs in front of the...

The European Arrest Warrant is a mechanism which enables a member state of the European Union to request extradition of a person named in such a warrant from any other member state. It is currently in the news because of a development in the investigation in France of the death in Ireland of a French film-producer, Sophie Toscan du Plantier. There are some circumstances in which extradition can be refused. One example is, according to page 14 of a guide still being offered on the website of the Irish Department of Justice :
6. Where a prosecution is still being considered in Ireland against the person for an offence or a decision has been taken to bring proceedings or not to bring proceedings in Ireland for an offence forming part of the offence specified in the European Arrest Warrant...
I must say that i don’t get a lot of time for pub reviewing these days but recently i did check out some fine Cork city centre establishments. I was meeting friends for dinner and got the times mixed up so being early i decided to head to the sextant bar. I have heard a lot of people saying this was ‘the place to be seen’ in the city so was interested to see what i would find. Over the years i have gone into many pubs on my own and the crowd in some has been more welcoming than others. I headed in to the sextant bar on Albert Quay and ordered a pint of Murphy’s at the bar. Apparently there has been a lot of work done to this bar in the recent past and it’s changed the kind of clientele it attracts. The service at the bar was efficient and friendly and i...
The next stop off was Mulligans bar on Parnell place in Cork city centre. This pub used to be located just a few doors up in a smaller premises. Before Mulligans took over the present bar it was called jd styles. Again i headed in myself and there was a group of 20 something girls just leaving. There wasn’t a big crowd inside but saying that i was in there about half seven. This bar is very big and has plenty of seating areas. It didn’t seem to me that there had been many changes since the jd styles days. That being said about the place itself, there is a certain change in the quality of the service and stout. The man serving behind the bar didn’t leave me standing for a second and had a fantastic pint of Muphy’s pulled within a few minutes. It was one of...
This is a gem of a pub. I am not sure if i should even be posting this as people who drink here want to keep it a secret! I have to do my duty though and tell you a little bit about it. This pub is located on Georges quay just across from the bridge leading onto the South Mall and Grand parade. I headed in there before going for a meal quite recently and i perched myself at the bar and had a chat with the three other guys inside. I had a pint of Murphy’s and it was spot on. It was great to walk into a pub where there was no sign of a tv or loud music. All they have and need in here is good oul banter. I joined in the conversation with the three other guys and the bar man. They were commenting on a bar not far away that was attracting a ‘rough crowd’. I decided...

The Cookware Company,

We recently discovered this shop as it seems to be the only one in a few hundred miles of Bandon that sells Sodastream gas refills. Catherine popped down a few weeks ago to get two refills and raved about the place. I drove down yesterday to have a look and get some of the Sodastream flavours.
They are just at the top of town on the main street, impossible to miss. I went in with 4 of our monsters so couldn’t spend as much time as I’d like. Suffice to say, if you like cookware or kitchenware, you’ll adore this shop. It is jammed with tons and tons of everything you could possibly need in a kitchen. In just a few minutes I got my Sodastream flavours (highly recommend that you start using this 1970s...

Fastnet Live Irish Mussels
I popped into the fish shop in Bantry today and spotted these. A fully sealed pack of live local mussels. I have long lamented the lack of fresh shellfish in shops in Cork and now they have no excuse. All you need is a cooler cabinet with no need for special shellfish expertise or having to deal with smells or things going off. These could literally be sold in every garage and convenience shop in the country.
Not only is it easier for shops but mussels are the ultimate fast food. All I did this evening was open the pack, rinse them, throw out the ones that were still open and cook them. Cooking consisted of chopping some garlic and onion, cooking that for a sec, lobbing in a ton of wine, one more minute, lob in the mussels, 4 minutes, add some cream,...
