The Criterion via Munster Pubs March 12th, 2010 at 00:04

I visited this very homely bar a while back. The Criterion is in Passage West, Co Cork. I had a few pints here and must say that the Murphy’s on tap here is top quality. Five of us headed in on the night and two of the gang are regulars. We got a seat to the left inside the door. There was a band playing on the night and they were good. The pub itself is small with loads of character. We met with the owner and she was very friendly and even offered us a lift home which was politely declined but very much appreciated. There was a great atmosphere on the night we were there. I found the toilets to be in very good condition on checking. No complaints about them. Overall i found the staff and other patrons to be chatty and friendly and a retun visit is inevitable i imagine....

Living legends-Prince via StevieGBlog February 24th, 2010 at 17:18

My "Living Legends" series continues this week with Prince. Where do you start with an artist such as Prince!? He is a one man musical machine who is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, singer, musician, collaborator and artist in his own right. He is a sexually ambiguous eccentric and incredible performer who has always been innovative with everything from his name to his attitude to the internet and the music industry. He is quite simply a music phenomenon and one of the most important music artists of all time. For many his best days are long gone, but even his later era music has often impressed me and his jazzy "Rainbow Children" album from 2001 remains for me one of his most amazing and exciting works. Even back when he was writing hits such as "Manic Monday" for...

False dawn of the city via In Photos dot org February 23rd, 2010 at 15:17

image As you may have already guessed, that’s not the dawn. It’s the lights of Cork City (and Blarney) shining and into the sky in a long exposure shot I made last August. I had meant to mention this sooner but 2 weeks ago I was shocked to hear about the death of Debbie Metrustry (@debbiemet), a wonderful person I had the pleasure of conversing with by tweet and by email over the course of the last year or so. She even won a print on this blog last year, but between this and that I never got around to sending it to her. I hope I can get in touch with her family at some stage and offer it to them instead. Debbie’s blog on WordPress.com is still there and will be as long as the service is there (which is forever, right?), I’ve seen to that. If you knew Debbie you might...

Learn about Twitter whilst having a nice glass of vino via Conor's Bandon Blog February 22nd, 2010 at 11:20

image I know the whole Twitter thing is still completely alien to a lot of people. How many wondered what the hell the papers were on about when discussing Dan Boyle’s “tweet“? Here’s a suggestion for dipping your toe in and getting a handle on it all. Karwig Wines in Carrigaline is running the third “Twebt” which is a Twitter wine-tasting competition (Bubble Brothers and Curious Wines ran the first two). The idea is very simple. You get a bottle of wine from Joe and his gang in Karwig’s and it is wrapped up so you can’t see the label. At an agreed time, 9pm Sunday March 7th, people open the wine and start tasting it and putting their tasting notes up on Twitter. Then they start guessing the country, grape etc and maybe even the exact wine....

They “Don’t Want-ta” via Of Laws and Men February 14th, 2010 at 10:13

I suggest that if you find the story that now follows implausible, you really don't know Ireland.Back in the bad old days (circa 1988) when Evil stalked the land, a well-got businessman of my acquaintance imported in his briefcase a floppy disc of business software for which he had paid £100 in Manchester. Although he knew well that there was zero chance of being caught "smuggling" it in, as plenty of others still do regularly, being an upright pillar of the business community, he approached the customs officials at Cork airport seeking to pay the proper excise duty and/or VAT. Under pressure now, he may allow that he was indulging his curiosity and/or being a bit disingenuous. If one were being cynical - a rare event hereabouts, I know - one might suspect that he had recently...

Ma Deleas via Munster Pubs February 5th, 2010 at 22:16

Over Christmas i got the opportunity to visit this gem of a pub on Tower Street on the outskirts of Cork City. The city center was thronged with Christmas revellers so a trip here was most welcome. Brendan introduced me to Ma Deleas and i must say that i am glad that he did. He is a regular there but i got just as warm a welcome in the pub. The pints of Murphys were top class and the service at the bar was efficient and friendly. Brendan reckons that that the bar man was one of the best in Cork and i couldn’t disagree. The pub itself was bigger than i imagined from the outside. It is long and to be fair there are plenty of seating areas. There is a pool table available in its own area just inside the front door. I got the impression that this was a real locals bar as...

image Abbeystrowry Cemetery is located near Skibereen in County Cork. It is the site of some of the mass graves used in the area during the famine around 1845. I didn’t know, or had forgotten there was a famine in 1740/1741 when 400,000 people died. That many people died on this little island of ours in such a short time? The mind boggles. Flashmob on Patrick Street via Of Laws and Men January 13th, 2010 at 11:59

On November 14th last, a demonstration in support of this petition took place on Saint Patrick Street, Cork's main thoroughfare. It took the novel form of a "flashmob" mass dance. Due to another commitment, I had to miss it but fortunately several people have shared their video records. ">The above is probably my favourite because the dancing is best but this one has better sound and more image variety....

CIT Mast to record Wind Data via Ambrand.com January 20th, 2010 at 01:28

CIT is erecting a wind monitoring mast on its Bishopstown campus, under a joint initiative from a number of Departments and the college buildings office. The mast will record wind data at a number of heights above the ground over the coming year. This data will be analysed by students on the Sustainable Energy Degree Programme, and others across a range of course programmes. The company Wind Energy Direct, based in Limerick, will also evaluate the site potential as a wind resource for future development. The mast will be located adjacent to the existing 2.4 kW turbine behind the astro turf pitches and will be over 50m in height. According to Chris Gibbons, Course Coordinator in Sustainable Energy at CIT: “This is a very exciting development for the institute, and represents a real...

Frosty morning in Blarney via In Photos dot org January 7th, 2010 at 12:58

image Another frosty morning in Blarney, County Cork. I’m glad I work from home. The roads are deadly now. Snow fell in Dublin yesterday and the city practically came to a stand still. It hasn’t snowed in Blarney yet but the roads have been bad. We had a Christmas Day adventure when the car didn’t make it up the hill to our house. We had to leave it on the main road. Two days ago I did a handbrake turn on the ice to do a turnabout. Wheels were turned right, hand brake was still partially on (by accident!) and when I pressed the accelerator the back wheels stayed in place while the car rotated in place. Thumbs up for front wheel drive cars! Here in Ireland we’re not prepared for this type of weather going on for so long. Must be almost a month now. So, next year...
