Engine No. 36 via In Photos dot org May 10th, 2010 at 18:15

image Engine No. 36 on display in Ken Station in Cork. Here’s what the Wikipedia page on the train station has to say about it: An old locomotive is on permanent display in the concourse at Kent Station since 1950. “Engine No. 36″ dates from 1847 and is displayed in the booking hall. Originally built by Bury, Curtis, and Kennedy of Liverpool at a cost of £1,955, the engine was obtained by the Great Southern and Western Railway to run services from Dublin to Cork. The engine remained in service until 1874. She was displayed at the Cork exhibition in 1902, the Railway Centenary Exhibition in 1925 and the bi-centenary of the Royal Dublin Society at Ballsbridge in 1930. She was moved to a new position and restored by Iarnród Éireann in 2007. I could have sworn that train was...

False dawn of the city via In Photos dot org February 23rd, 2010 at 15:17

image As you may have already guessed, that’s not the dawn. It’s the lights of Cork City (and Blarney) shining and into the sky in a long exposure shot I made last August. I had meant to mention this sooner but 2 weeks ago I was shocked to hear about the death of Debbie Metrustry (@debbiemet), a wonderful person I had the pleasure of conversing with by tweet and by email over the course of the last year or so. She even won a print on this blog last year, but between this and that I never got around to sending it to her. I hope I can get in touch with her family at some stage and offer it to them instead. Debbie’s blog on WordPress.com is still there and will be as long as the service is there (which is forever, right?), I’ve seen to that. If you knew Debbie you might...

The Jedward Angel via In Photos dot org February 6th, 2010 at 22:11

image Bishop Lucey Park in Cork City was the location of a wonderful display of angel statues. They were decorated in all sorts of ways and even had one dedicated to Jedward! Adam had a great time running around them, and had loads of fun playing with another boy named Nathaniel. Abbeystrowry Cemetery via In Photos dot org January 24th, 2010 at 20:21

image Abbeystrowry Cemetery is located near Skibereen in County Cork. It is the site of some of the mass graves used in the area during the famine around 1845. I didn’t know, or had forgotten there was a famine in 1740/1741 when 400,000 people died. That many people died on this little island of ours in such a short time? The mind boggles. image A small boat in Baltimore, County Cork. The Galleries on Mallow Camera Club are back in operation! The site used to use a modified fGallery to allow members to upload photos but there’s an exploit for the last version of that plugin, it doesn’t work in WP 2.9.x and the author has abandoned the project unfortunately. WordPress now supports galleries anyway so I converted the fGallery galleries into pages and upload files in the posts table. Works nicely now! Related PostsNo related posts...

We took Adam out in it after wrapping him up warm and he played with the kids down the road, throwing snow around, messing with a bucket, and generally having fun. Hi Mairead! Frosty morning in Blarney via In Photos dot org January 7th, 2010 at 12:58

image Another frosty morning in Blarney, County Cork. I’m glad I work from home. The roads are deadly now. Snow fell in Dublin yesterday and the city practically came to a stand still. It hasn’t snowed in Blarney yet but the roads have been bad. We had a Christmas Day adventure when the car didn’t make it up the hill to our house. We had to leave it on the main road. Two days ago I did a handbrake turn on the ice to do a turnabout. Wheels were turned right, hand brake was still partially on (by accident!) and when I pressed the accelerator the back wheels stayed in place while the car rotated in place. Thumbs up for front wheel drive cars! Here in Ireland we’re not prepared for this type of weather going on for so long. Must be almost a month now. So, next year...

New Year’s Eve Lunar Eclipse via In Photos dot org January 1st, 2010 at 16:57

image We called over to a friend’s house yesterday evening and even though I had heard there would be an eclipse I completely forgot about it. My Dad even texted me at 6.25pm that it’d be happening between 7pm and 8pm but I still forgot. Lucky he rang my wife and she reminded me of the event! Unfortunately I only had my Sigma 18-200 zoom. The Canon 75-300 was at home so this is a severely cropped shot of the moon. I thought there was going to be a full eclipse but it wasn’t to be and only a shadow fell across the face of our nearest celestial neighbour. The half finished Opera Lane via In Photos dot org December 31st, 2009 at 11:50

image The new Opera Lane in Cork City separates the gleaming buildings of the new development that was built right in the heart of the city and completed this year. Back in July it was a rugged dirty construction site, and this photo is a fitting end to 2009, and the Noughties. Not much construction work going on anywhere in Ireland now. Just lots of debt. I’ll post a photo tomorrow, but I’ll be posting every 3 days after that to give myself a little more free time. This blog gets a third of the traffic of Holy Shmoly! yet takes far more time to update. Traffic isn’t the reason why you should blog, but a photoblog is a very public display of creative work by it’s owner. Without feedback from new visitors it’s hard to maintain an enthusiasm for it.
