Business Blogging, Online Marketing training in Dublin via Damien Mulley September 29th, 2008 at 12:27

image Feedback from the talk I gave last week for the Irish Computer Society has been very good, thanks to the few dozen people that came along and who might now be reading this blog! The lunchtime talk was a taster for two training days I’ll be doing for the ICS. One is on Business Blogging and the other is on Online Marketing. Photo owned by saragoldsmith (cc) If you didn’t realise that changing the titles of your pages on you website can drastically improve your Google ranking, that your blog can potentially get you book deals, that paying for Google ads for your website name is a bit of a waste and that despite Bebo being horrible and rash inducing in adults you have to be there to market to those under 22, then it’s worth coming along to these courses. Both courses plonk...

If you can’t be interesting, be useful via Damien Mulley September 21st, 2008 at 03:27

image Via Roo Reynolds was a talk by the amazingly interesting and wizard of interestingness - Russell Davies and one of the things Russell suggested was be interesting and: If you can’t be interesting, be useful There have been a tonne of blog posts about the drunkathon that was last Thursday evening at Spy but for me the most interesting post was by Daragh Doyle. It answers the first part of the above quote. Darragh did a brilliant A to Z of the evening in pictures and verse. Imaginative and informative. While all the other blog posts about it were great, this stood out a clear mile. That’s one way of being interesting. Fricking laser beams...

Two new blogs! via Stephen Spillane's My Opinion September 15th, 2008 at 21:33

Well two people I know have started blogs (for one its there second!) One of them Earl ST. Vincent (ie Shane) has started his first blog "An officer and a gentleman...". He attempts to explain in his first post why he is joining the Royal Navy next year. I wish him all the best as he is dedicated to this goal!the other blog is one I have been bugging my sister to start a new one and she has updated her old one! Anyway her new blog is full of what I call "random poetry" which me and a few of our friends think are hilarious! She's styling the blog as "Literary genius :P ", I'll leave that up to...

Things you can say on a blog that you can’t to your “public” via Damien Mulley July 31st, 2008 at 12:51

image Sometimes you can be more open and honest with strangers than with friends and family. What can be too much information for a friend isn’t for some strangers. I think many blogs are handy confessionals, like post secret. Unfortunately my friends who don’t blog are now reading this blog and many who read this blog have become some of my best friends so I seem to be hamstrung just a little when it comes to making this a dear diary thing. But almost like the way people ask philosophical-like questions at 4am while being half-stoned, why not go and ask in public a question or thought you had but kept to yourself? Here’s my contribution: How come within minutes of eating asparagus, your wee smells of it? It’s the same for coffee. Photo owned by woodleywonderworks (cc)...

Blog Awards 2008 - Category suggestions wanted via Damien Mulley November 14th, 2007 at 10:31

image The 2008 Blog Awards will be in February, not in the usual month of March. As a result planning for it is starting earlier this year for it. I’ve been getting feedback all through the year so I’lll be removing some categories and I’ll be adding others. If you want to suggest a category please do but do remember I’m looking for a category/niche where there are least 20 blogs covering that area. Otherwise I’m not sure it is worth creating a category but perhaps the next year there might be numbers for Blog Awards 4. These are the existing categories for the Blog Awards: * Best Blog * Best Blog Post * Most Humorous Post * Best Photo Blog * Best Arts and Culture Blog * Best Political Blog * Best Group Blog * Best Personal Blog * Best Use of the Irish Language in...

Science Week Ireland blogging competition Day 2 - “What invention do you want to see most in the future?” via Damien Mulley November 14th, 2007 at 09:27

image Another day, another Wii. Yesterday saw a load of entries and they’re all worth reading. Some of them are dripping with nostalgia and brought back a lot of old memories. Today the question posed is “What invention do you want to see most in the future?”. Already out of the blocks early this morning is Roosta with Giant Fighting Robots....

Picture of the Week via Riemann's Cut November 3rd, 2007 at 12:05

image I love the contrast between the "alien" orange and blue wheely bins and the dank, decaying laneway entrance that effectively acts as a frame. Its a toss up between cropping out the face on the left and leaving the leg float into frame without an owner, or leaving it as is, sacrificing composition for personality. Eitherway, if it were my image I would definately crop out the first row of red blocks, somewhere in the grey row just below the foot. This would strengthen the composition considerably.Simon is an English photograher living in Ireland since 2004. He lives and Newbridge and works for a large company on the outskirts of Dublin... or so he says anyway :) His photoblog seems reletively new with a small, but varied collection of photographs. Hopefully he will continue to add to...

Talking Shite via Letters from the idiot October 29th, 2007 at 15:54

Would you be willing to donate time you already spent, to help give people more time to live? This is international breast cancer month. It's why I actually started putting up the pink images here. At the time I joked about what would be done with Bowel Cancer Awareness month. Bowel cancer does not have any glamour to it. We are talking about a part of the body which we tend not to thing about until something goes wrong. Two things occured this week and it sparked an idea. One where I'll need your help.I listened to the Podcast Sisters creating a book by re-using your blog (I'm paraphrasing). And I came across Chris Anderson talking about Blogging Heroes: Interviews with 30 of the World's Top Bloggers by Mike Banks.Bank's book is a series of interviews with bloggers. Sales are presumably...

Picture Of The Week via Riemann's Cut October 28th, 2007 at 15:13

image Ian Anderson at Cork City Hall, December 2001I was looking through some of my old photographs when it dawned on me that I can no longer tell what I have or have not blogged about. I guess thats one of the milestones of blogging everyone looks forward to: internet-related-alzheimers! Oh boy, I can't wait for HTTP-colon-cancer to come along!I took the picture back in 2001 when Jethro Tull played Cork City Hall. I also attended the concert they put on in Dublins Point Depot the night before. I got in early and found a seat near the front. Feeling brave from the night before I decided to bring my camera with me. Nothing fancy, just my old Olympus OM-2n, a Tamron 28-200mm lens and a few rolls of 1600iso fuji film. I can remember it all so well because after spending most of the night snapping...

Jon Lord Website updates via Riemann's Cut October 25th, 2007 at 21:37

image It appears Jon Lord now has an official blog! Not written by himself unfortunately but we are promised personal posts from time to time. The interesting part is that I learned of this blog via picturedwithin.com, a fansite for Jon Lord, with a news update on the 18th of this month. This is the first update on the site for over 3 years.I must remind myself to subscribe to the new blog plus add links to it here. Hopefully Lord will get the finger out and start releasing all the albums we were promised! :D "Boom of the Tingling Strings"...

The World In One City via My Opinion October 21st, 2007 at 16:44

I read about this in the Observer (Guardian on a Sunday) and think it is an excellent idea. Basically Owen Powell and Alex Horne are trying to meet people from all 192 countries in the world in London! And they've nearly done it! Their blog is fantastic detailing all the meetings they have with people from different countries. Their deadline is the 24th of October, so it will be interesting to see if they make...

New Blog On Zeuhl via Riemann's Cut October 7th, 2007 at 19:52

I came across a relatively new blog (although not updated recently) on Zeuhl music a little while ago. It's got a great selection of rare zeuhl albums you can download, such as Michel Altmayer`s "Troll - Volume II". You probably wont like it if you don't like the 80's Magma stuff such as "Merci". It's got a great track on it though called "ankh", which is similar to Magma's "Zess", it even includes a little theme from it as homage. Anyway the blog is here:http://zeuhlmusic.blogspot.comAnd it's owned by this dude:..his name is Tom-Erik Løe and he's a zeuhl fanatic, or perhaps just a fanatic if the picture is anything to go by. He's working on his own zeuhl piece at the moment, "Gorkeulhzenht". It sounds pretty authentic and you have to give him kudo's for the fact that he's multitracked...

Give me six lines written by the most honorable of men, and I will find an excuse in them to hang him via Damien Mulley October 3rd, 2007 at 12:57

image Privacy as we know it is dead and we can’t get it back. This delights corporations and Governments but at the same time they only enjoy you having lack of privacy. Will google say where your GMail is stored, will they say what exactly they are telling advertisers about you? No. Will the Government disclose what they are planning to do with your taxmoney or to do with your freedoms? No. In fact they are trying to destroy the whole idea of Freedom of Information, even the Information Commissioner says so. So all this privacy does not mean global transparency. Some thoughts on aspects of privacy: We don’t disclose your details to third parties but … Google of course does not disclose ALL your data to advertisers or others and what they mean is, they won’t disclose...

Facebook - Trying to be friends with 400 facebook “friends” via Damien Mulley October 1st, 2007 at 12:30

image So many people are saying that this whole Facebook “friends” thing is diluting the whole genuine friends thing, since really we’re just adding contacts some of whom are friends and many of which we will never communicate with again, kind of familiar strangers, which kind of goes against the idea of Facebook being a social platform, does it not? I now have about 400 “friends” on Facebook and so I decided if I could maintain regular and social contact with these people. Tara Hunt by the way has a great post on how “friends” and “contacts” are handled by different social networks. As I was writing this post, TechCrunch announced that Facebook is going to redo the way “friends” are ranked. Good. Each day I tackled one letter...

’shop for Mulley via Riemann's Cut September 30th, 2007 at 13:38

image Damien Mulley wanted people to photoshop a Speed Nanny image he blogged about on Monday last. Speed Nanny is a gps device that alerts drivers to oncoming dangerous sections of the road. Aparently it also alerts the driver to common Garda speed trap areas. A silly feature really as everyone knows that the best way to defeat Traffic Corps is just to drive...

In memory of Blogorrah - Some new lovelygirl pics courtesy of Speed Nanny via Damien Mulley September 24th, 2007 at 18:59

image I got sent these today as part of a PR promo for a device called the speed nanny. Nothing like promoting child safety like having the name of the product displayed on a low cut top of a model while she straddles a fast car. Stick in a few kids wondering what the feck is going on and you have perfection. Blurb: Satellite positioning combined with intelligent software gives drivers critical safety information when they need it most; when approaching accident risk locations such as dangerous junctions, bends, schools and pedestrian risk zones as identified by the Irish Road Safety Authority. But if I read this right, it’s a handy device for warning you where coppers normally operate speed traps: Speed Nanny monitors your speed and location as you drive and provides an alert...
