An anchor sits in the main square in Bantry Town.
According to the Wikipedia page on the town,
This anchor from the French Armada force in 1796 was discovered off the northeast point of Whiddy island, Bantry Bay, in 1980 by the Dutch salvage company Smit Tak
Couldn’t find much else about it online after a brief search. Odd.

A sign at the base of the short hill below the white pillar near Bantry in Co Cork warns of high cliffs. Unfortunately Adam was asleep in the car and I couldn’t venture any further so I’ll have to return some day to take photos of that pillar.

A small ferry casts off and heads out of Bantry Harbour with lots of hunting dogs and their owners. This was last February and I watched with interest wondering where they were going.

Bantry town is built on the hills surrounding a natural harbour so it’s a hard slog with a buggy if you want to go anywhere. Shot this from the road overlooking a few houses. You can see the local hospital in the background too I think.

Pobal ar Aire. Community on Alert. This is (was?) a scheme designed to help neighbourhoods help themselves by volunteering to keep an eye out for trouble makers or lawlessness. The local police are then informed.
It seems to work well, these signs are dotted all around the country, but in Bantry it looks like they’re protecting their beer..

The Frank & Walters and Ham Sandwich will perform at this year’s Bantry Barbecue Festival.
Once again, the Bantry Barbecue Festival committee are happy to announce a full weekend of music, food and entertainment from Friday 1st August to Monday 4th August.
Raffle tickets will be on sale to help upgrade the existing festival and also to help the Bantry Red Cross, who this year is our main benefactor. So please support us!
On the Sunday we will have our raft race again. Anyone interested in entering a raft, please contact Mary in Ma Murphy’s before the 24th July.
During the weekend there will be free barbecues and music in the pubs. A great weekend for all the family!...
Pretty yellow flowers bloom in late April in the grounds of the Westlodge Hotel we stayed in while on holiday in Bantry. Spring was late coming to these gardens so it was nice to see a splash of colour!

Last February we spent a weekend in Bantry where I made a couple of very nice shots when I drove into the hills surrounding the town. The area was so nice that I wandered up the road on foot a few yards for a better shot of this lone tree. I was disgusted to see the beige boxes of a PC and monitor lying half hidden in the tall grass of the bog.
Perhaps I should have climbed down and retrieved them but Adam was asleep in the car and we were miles from anywhere. I didn’t want to risk slipping and hurting myself. It’s such a shame those electronics weren’t recycled at the local dump. I wonder what Gardai would find if they looked at the drive in that PC. I wonder if they’d care?
Tomorrow - AJ tried booking Robodock tickets for himself but could only book for the 12...

A house with a striking red door overlooks a field with sheep in one corner and a feeding trough in the foreground. This was shot near Bantry in West Cork a few months ago and I just love the vast rolling grassy slope of the ground.
Cork City Marathon is on Monday. It starts at 9am in Patrick’s Street. I’m going to try and get in there for that time. I’ll be up anyway since 6am so hopefully I’ll have some shots to share next week!

Boats and lobster pots (I presume?) lie on the quay in Bantry. This area is a must see for photographers. There are so many things to see you could spend hours there just snapping away!

When you leave the wide open area near the harbour in Bantry you come across really steep hills to the east. I happened to walk that way pushing a buggy so I had to stop and catch my breath here before heading on up.
Bantry is much bigger than I thought before and I should get some nice urban shots there the next time I’m down that way!

I walked around Bantry Town a bit snapping the local streets and this house appealed to me. I think I saw it in b/w and the lovely texture of the walls.
It could also have been the hill and I wanted a small break from pushing the buggy around too of course.

Learning the ropes
Ropes tie up small boats in Bantry, Co Cork. The tide is very far out and many boats are stranded in the mud.
I love the texture of rope. Yummy.

Old farm building in ruins
Out in the wilds of Co Cork, to the north of Bantry I found an old deserted farm. The house looked like it had been empty for some time and some of the out buildings were in worse repair.

The long road
A road winds into the hills north of Bantry. Yesterday’s photo of the Bantry hills was taken just up the road from here!

The rolling hills of Bantry
This is one of my favourite shots from the weekend in Bantry.
Basically I drove up the back roads out of Bantry town, then came to another town and picked the smallest road out of that place before going up a tiny little boithirin with barely room for my car. Wonderful.
