Another frosty morning in Blarney, County Cork. I’m glad I work from home. The roads are deadly now. Snow fell in Dublin yesterday and the city practically came to a stand still. It hasn’t snowed in Blarney yet but the roads have been bad. We had a Christmas Day adventure when the car didn’t make it up the hill to our house. We had to leave it on the main road.
Two days ago I did a handbrake turn on the ice to do a turnabout. Wheels were turned right, hand brake was still partially on (by accident!) and when I pressed the accelerator the back wheels stayed in place while the car rotated in place. Thumbs up for front wheel drive cars!
Here in Ireland we’re not prepared for this type of weather going on for so long. Must be almost a month now. So, next year...

The new Opera Lane in Cork City separates the gleaming buildings of the new development that was built right in the heart of the city and completed this year. Back in July it was a rugged dirty construction site, and this photo is a fitting end to 2009, and the Noughties. Not much construction work going on anywhere in Ireland now. Just lots of debt.
I’ll post a photo tomorrow, but I’ll be posting every 3 days after that to give myself a little more free time. This blog gets a third of the traffic of Holy Shmoly! yet takes far more time to update. Traffic isn’t the reason why you should blog, but a photoblog is a very public display of creative work by it’s owner. Without feedback from new visitors it’s hard to maintain an enthusiasm for it. Flash back to 2005 if you will. Ireland is in the grip of the Celtic Tiger boom. Cork is undergoing a transformation. The city’s streets were dug up and remolded with apparently improved drainage (didn’t help recently unfortunately) and the revamping of the city centre was in full swing.

I never noticed this sign for a dental laboratory on Castle Street before. Maybe it’s the large gaping hole in the streetscape next to it that caught my eye? It must be a really old sign, that phone number had a “4″ prefix added to it many years ago.

First of all Virgin Megastore was sold off to Zavvi and shortly afterwards they had a liquidation sale and went under. Now Director’s Cut are in there and it’s a depressing store. There’s no piped music to liven the dead atmosphere, oh dear!

The ceiling of the Sanctuaire de Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré in Quebec is quite a sight. In a low light situation you can’t get a more stable support than the floor at your feet, lucky me.
A wide angle lens meant I had to run for cover lest the camera capture me in the image. The 2 second timer was very convenient for this purpose.

The Saint Anne-de-Beaupré Basilica in Quebec is an imposing but beautiful building. It’s surrounded by flat river side countryside and low lying buildings so it really stands out.

On the journey into Quebec City from where we’re staying it’s impossible not to miss the plumes of steam (and smoke?) rising from a number of buildings, seemingly right in the middle of an urban area.
According to our guide the buildings contain a cigarette factory and a paper recycling plant. Up close one of the buildings looked like it was on fire as white steam/smoke escaped from dozens of chimneys on the roof and possibly at the side of the building.
In the foreground are parts of the old City Wall.

Phew! What a day! Today we had a great photowalk in Cork. I hesitate to say this, but I think it was probably the most enjoyable photowalk I’ve ever been on.
We started out in the Montenotte Hotel, with tea and scones and a chat. After refreshments we headed up on the roof for a stunning view of Cork City and the Blackrock side of the suburbs. I’ve never seen into Pairc Ui Chaoimh from above like that before!
Soon after we headed down to Dillon’s Cross, and on down Summerhill. Halfway down we took a detour here where we got splendid views of the train station and Julia, the new Swansea Cork Ferry that will operate from March next year.
Snapping all the way, we headed into town and on to the Bar and Grill on the Boardwalk, pictured above. That’s my son Adam,...

The development of Half Moon Street and the adjoining Quay are coming along nicely, even with the old house in the middle of it that must have been kept for historical reasons.
The other side of the building was pictured previously on Reflection on Half Moon Street.
