The most scaryist time of the year via Letters from the idiot December 31st, 2007 at 17:57

Well 2007 is on the way out. And as usual in Ireland, all things come to a halt for a while. Christmas is a scary time of the year because, usually, everything gets changed this week. This is probably the reason why resolutions are saved for this time of the year in this part of the world. You've just survived one week of changes intact. Why not make more...For some people, this is a time of the year when they are handed responsibilities that they normally don't look after. (Some even learned new skills this way). These people (of which I'm one) have their lives thrown a little off kilter for a while. And they have to consider what's important and what needs to change. For others everything comes to a stop. Work stops. The life of the office stops (and some people try to hide the evidence...

Best invention in 2007 via Letters from the idiot November 17th, 2007 at 23:23

Today's Science Week question is "In your opinion what was the best invention in 2007".I've been looking in to this, partly to see what exactly was invented in 2007. The US Patent search revealed a few things ( like this completely not work safe item), ah. No.With 20/20 hindsight we might declare Bruce Crower's improved engine design the eventual winner. Or given the popularity of Lego as the best invention of people's childhood the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT software as the best. Given my data loss, I'm tempted to award the linkable USB hard disk as the winner, but no.As Conor asked "How many people are going to plump for the jesusphone in their posts?" Well no. The iPhone simply has one of the best user interfaces on a touch screen created. However the phone itself , without Bluetooth, may...

The Kerry Animal via Ach go háirithe September 13th, 2007 at 16:09

image Every September, hundreds (sometimes thousands but this is rare) of Kerry Animals form a mega-herd and make their way northwards to the metropolis of Dublin. Each year when the mega herd arrives on the outskirts and in the centre of Dublin city, visitors and locals alike look on in astonishment at the their backward ways and struggle to understand their thick unintelligible accents. Scientists have long studied the migratory habits of the Kerry Animal but the details of this remarkable transeprovincial migration are only now emerging from a study using electronic tracking tags to follow individual Kerry Animals. The Kerry Animal’s Migratory Path The migration period can last up to 2 days but many make the migratory round trip in one day (the shortest know cycle for any migratory...

Well last nights semi was very surprising, only 1 of my predictions got through and that was Turkey, which means no Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Norway, Denmark or Andorra (my favourites). I shall be Instinct watching it on the big screen, so if your around come say hi! Now I'll run through the finalists, with links to their songs and their betting odds from paddypower.com.Bosnia & Herzegovina (Youtube) 80-1This year Bosnia and Herzegovina is represented by Marija Sestic with 'Rijeka Bez Imena'. This is the largest contest ever, so this will be a long post on the Semi-Finalist. The countries are listed in running order.Bulgaria (Song on youtube)Bulgaria this year is being represented by Elitsa TODOROVA and Stoyan YANKOULOV with a song called 'Water'. So it was a busy few days via Damien Mulley March 5th, 2007 at 13:57

image Flew into Dublin on Friday morning and the phone was hopping from 8am til midnight. RTE filmed me in the Alexander at 1130am and it went well. Philip that interviewed me was fantastic to chat to. Someone who knows his subject matter and gets blogs. We had a good discussion after the interview where we talked about media and technology and he educated me a little on what he does. Chatted to a few journalists by phone all day and then rushed to Trinity for 1830 so I could give a talk about IrelandOffline and lobby groups. Thanks to the 6-7 people that turned up on a Friday night. Glad I could answer everyone’s questions. After Trinity I headed over to the Village to see “I’m from Barcelona” play. They eventually took to the stage at 2130 and I was so physically...
